The Cummings Debacle: West Devon Falls from Conservative Control

The Conservative Party has suffered a blow in Devon this evening with the resignation of Councillor The Reverend Mike Davies. Cllr Davies represents the party on West Devon Borough Council but the Devon Live website is reporting he has quit the party in protest at Dominic Cummings’ refusal to resign as the Prime Minister’s Special Advisor. Tonight’s resignation in West Devon is particularly damaging for the Conservatives because it has resulted in the party losing control of the council. Cllr Davies will sit as an Independent.

Following the last local elections in 2019, the Conservatives had a one seat majority on West Devon Borough Council. Independent councillors held 11 seats with two each for the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. With the resignation of Mike Davies, no party or group has overall control of the council.

Cllr Davies has represented Okehampton North since 2015. Three members represent the ward. One, Tony Leech, already sits as an Independent. The second is Kevin Ball who remains a Conservative councillor.
