The Reshuffle Rumour Mill

The post-Covid-19 reshuffle rumours turned into a during-Covid-19 reshuffle. This page is not being updated for the moment, but history suggests that it won’t be long before the speculation starts again. It was bad news this time around for Robert Buckland at Justice, Gavin Williamson at Education and Robert Jenrick at Housing, Communities and Local Government. Many of the rumours in the media didn’t come true. A few did though, particularly those on sackings. It was a good reshuffle for Anne-Marie Trevelyan who is back in the Cabinet and newly appointed Nadine Dorries, Nadhim Zahawi and Simon Clarke.

7th June 2020 – The New European suggests that Home Secretary Priti Patel, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland and International Trade Secretary Liz Truss could be at risk for defying orders to give public support to Dominic Cummings. Jonathon Reed states that Jacob Rees-Mogg is tipped to lose his job as Leader of the House of Commons. Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and Therese Coffey at Work and Pensions are said to be at risk of demotion.

7th June 2020 – The Mirror supports the New European view on a reshuffle, which could come in July. Paymaster General Penny Mordaunt, who is currently a minister at the Cabinet Office is thought to be a contender to return to the Cabinet. She was briefly Defence Secretary under Theresa May. Culture Minister Caroline Dinenage and Environment Minister Victoria Prentis are likely to be promoted. Matt Hancock is widely expected to remain Health Secretary.

14th June 2020 – The Daily Mail is reporting that Gavin Williamson could be at risk in the forthcoming reshuffle. It follows what is perceived among some Tory MPs as poor handling of school reopening by the Education Secretary. The newspaper is also naming Elizabeth Truss as being in the firing line as International Trade Secretary. Pressure is also growing on the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick. He is embroiled in a row over his approval of a party donor’s property scheme.

18th June 2020 – Anne-Marie Trevelyan is expected to be given a new job in the forthcoming Cabinet reshuffle according to the Chronicle Live website. Her current role of Secretary of State for International Development will be abolished when the department is merged with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

21st June 2020 – The Guardian is reporting that the reshuffle can be expected in September. It again names Gavin Williamson (Education), Robert Jenrick (Housing, Communities and Local Government) and Therese Coffey (Work and Pensions) as candidates for the sack. The article suggests that Jeremy Hunt and Liam Fox could return to the top table in government.

25th November 2020 – The Chief Whip, Mark Spencer, is believed to be moving to a departmental brief in a forthcoming reshuffle according to Katy Balls in the I. Among the contenders to replace him should be move are Scottish Secretary Alister Jack and Transport Minister Chris Heaton-Harris.

27th November 2020 – Northern MPs are reported as being lined up to form part of a government reset according to the Financial Times. Treasury Minister Kemi Badenoch, Foreign Office Minister James Cleverly and Health Minister Edward Argar are rumoured to be in line for top jobs. New MPs Claire Coutinho and Laura Trott are also said to be in the Prime Minister’s mind for junior posts. The newspaper speculates that Jake Berry may return to the frontbench as Party Chairman and Sajid Javid may return to Cabinet as Foreign Secretary. Reports suggest Dominic Raab may be moved to the Cabinet Office if Michael Gove gets a new job, possibly at the Department of Health. Anne-Marie Trevelyan is likely to be given a new job in the Cabinet after losing her International Development job when the post was abolished.
